The present structure belongs to a period that goes from the 16th to the 18th century. The original bell, which is still at Giorgino, goes back to 1679.
However, the presence of a church at Giorgino probably goes much farther back to the presence of an Oriental monastery, which would place it between the 6th and 9th centuries AD. In fact, the first references to a church in Giorgino date back to the first millennium. But on considering the frequent confusion in Sardinia between Saint George of Cappadocia and Saint George the bishop of Suelli, it is not easy to say whether the present church rises exactly where the original settlement was located or whether it was built at a more recent time. It is certainly from the name of the church devoted to Saint George that the place takes the name of Giorgino, without trying to determine if the saint in question was the one from Cappadocia or Suelli.
The church today presents a 17th-century architecture with an octagonal dome, a simple façade with a small vaulted bell tower where we find the bell that dates back to 1679, a covered hall with two pitches, an 18th-century altar and the original 17th-century pavement in hand-painted majolica. Inside the dome we find a frescoe with the four moors, probably from the time of Eleonora di Arborea, characterized by the fact that they are facing in different directions and are blindfolded.
Originally, the church also housed a retable by Lorenzo Cavaro, Crocifissione, painted in 1508. At present a part of the retable is conserved in Cagliari’s National Art Gallery and another part, depicting the Madonna on a throne, is in a private collection in Turin. Above the altar now is an 18th-century altarpiece with gold leaf and a Via Crucis made of wood and gypsum. On the simple altar that goes back to the middle of the 18th century there is a statue of Saint Efisio, perhaps the work of Cima or Lonis, which dates back to the end of the 18th century.
